Do Lunch at Lasdon this Summer

June 23, 2005

Listen to the sounds of cool jazz as you dine al fresco at Westchester’s largest publicly owned arboretum during “Lunch at Lasdon,” to be held on Fridays, July 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29, at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial in Somers.

“Lunch at Lasdon” is sponsored by The Pepsi Bottling Group Foundation in Somers, and is presented by the Westchester County Parks.

From noon to 2 p.m. each week, visitors can bring their own lunch and enjoy the sounds of the Kevin Callaghan Trio, the ABCs of Jazz and the Riley Bandy Jazz Group as they perform classic jazz favorites on alternate Fridays on the patio of the Lasdon gift shop. A limited number of tables are available on the patio, or visitors can bring a blanket for seating on the lawn and enjoy a spectacular view of the Muscoot Reservoir.

While at Lasdon, visitors are welcome to browse the seasonal plants and gardening-related items that are offered for sale in the Lasdon gift shop, which is staffed by members of the volunteer organization the Friends of Lasdon Arboretum. All proceeds from the shop are donated to the programs at the arboretum.

Lasdon Park is a 234-acre park featuring acres of woodlands, open grass meadows and formal gardens that showcase various tree, shrub and flower specimens from all over the world. The park is also the home of the new William and Mildred Lasdon Memorial Garden, the Chinese Friendship Pavilion and Culture Garden, the Famous and Historic Tree Trail, along with inspirational memorials and a museum honoring Westchester County war veterans.

Admission and parking for “Lunch at Lasdon” are free, but donations are accepted to help expand the development of the arboretum. Parking and rest rooms are accessible to the disabled. In inclement weather, the event will be cancelled.

Lasdon Park is located on Route 35 in Somers, and can be reached via I-684, exit 6. Head west off the exit and follow for approximately four miles. The entrance is on the left. Or, take the Taconic State Parkway to Route 202 exit, and head east on Route 202. Follow to Route 35 and turn left; the park is three miles ahead on the right.
