As a result of the increased risk of fire caused by recent dry conditions, Acting County Parks Commissioner Joseph G. Montalto announced a ban on open fires at all county parks.
“Due to the lack of rainfall this month, many parks have become extremely dry,” Montalto said. “The passing thunderstorms predicted today are not expected to generate enough rain to help. We ask that all visitors to our parks take precautions that will protect our parkland.”
Montalto said that during the ban, charcoal and propane fires will only be permitted for cooking in permanently-fixed grills in the parks. No open fires are permitted. The Parks Department will continue to monitor conditions on a daily basis and will re-evaluate the ban if any appreciable rainfall occurs in the next several days.
