Play Ball
August 15, 2005Westchester residents will have a new league baseball field on Virginia Road in Valhalla. Earlier this summer, the county opened an all-weather soccer field at Saxon Woods Park in White Plains and recently completed work on new soccer/baseball fields at Croton Point Park in Croton.
The county’s Board of Acquisition and Contract today voted to award Popoli Construction of North White Plains a $713,600 contract to build the ballfield on Virginia Road.
Popoli was the lowest bidder among the 17 contractors who submitted bids. If all goes according to schedule, the field should be ready for players by next spring. The field and a parking area would be turned over to the Town of Mount Pleasant and used by the Kensico Little League and others.
“Adults and children all over Westchester compete for time on playing fields because the bottom line is that we just don’t have enough of them,” said County Executive Andy Spano. “I announced the Legacy program because I believed the county should create recreational areas for our communities. We build the fields and the local communities care for them. It’s a terrific partnership, and one that makes for a lot of happy children, including the grown up ones.”
