Village Orders Metro Enviro Shutdown

September 1, 2005

I just heard from the press. They have informed me as follows and they have confirmed with the village that in view of Judge Nicolai's decision, the village has ordered Metro Enviro to close on Sept. 1 at 5 p.m.

After hearing Mayor Schmidt and Trustee Steinberg say at several recent meetings of the Village Board that the fight to determine the future of the Metro Enviro site was a “team effort” and something “we must all work together to achieve”, I was stunned to see them on Channel 12 News tonight at a press conference with the Republican candidate for County Executive Astorino at the entrance to the facility. Neither Trustee Kane nor Trustee Wiegman were in attendance or, apparently informed of it. Is this a “team effort” or an example of “working together”? Fortunately, Channel 12 News reporters did their homework and presented a full and accurate report on what Judge Nicolai’s recent court decision really means as far as control of the Metro Enviro site. The message that I got tonight is that Village residents’ very real concerns about the future control of this site were reduced to a partisan, self-promoting ‘sound bite’ which was only saved by good work by the Channel 12 new reporters who cut through it . It was a most inappropriate and very self-serving performance.

Dear Deep Six Fifty,

How Mr. Herbek and his staff execute the directions of the Village Board is way beyond my expertise — I would not presume to tell him how to do his job, how to staff scarce village resources, etc.

If the Village Board wants to rely exclusively on the village website and related mechanisms to communicate directly with the residents of Croton, even though they know and are “upset” (according to you)that this isn’t working at the moment, and even though Ann Gallelli has demonstrated that posting to the blog is another way to get a message out to us, well, that speaks for itself.

It seems obvious to me that the open government team is not getting the word out, and this started before any two week vacation of a village employee. You can blame it on Mr. Herbek, praise the new Board and promote CCC1 all you want, of course. But the silence of our elected officials remains, loud and clear.

It’s important to note:

CCC1 (Maria Cudequest) is unauthorized, has no credentials or authority to speak for the village or any of us. Furthermore, it’s irresponible for lazy reporters to feed her false sense of authority by using her as a source of information for articles. She and her ver small band of supporters have been wrong in evaluations of second hand information time and time again. She and those few supporters should cease and desist in their misguided efforts to control the village board. Mayor Schmidt and the Board Members will do what they were elected to do without any direction from CCC1. Any responsible resident who is concerned about this village would be wise to ignore her rantings and go to our elected officials for accurate answers to their questions - not to CCC1.

Dr. Schmidt is our Mayor, like it or not, and we have 4 responsible board members, who hopefully know what’s going on and who will follow the advice of our highly paid attorney.

We can only hope Michael Gerrard is equiped to handle the complexities of these litigations. We can be sure that Maria Cudequest and CCC1 are not.

Sam You should take this up with the village administration and Mr. Herbeck. They have only one person who can make postings to the website and that is Janine. When she is not there it doesn’t happen. Also the village said that since the subscriber lists were upgraded or fixed or something three/four weeks ago, things that are posted don’t always show up and that they are working with someone called Virtual Town Hall to fix the problem. The board is supposed to be quite upset about it and the village said today it would be all fixed finally tomorrow. The beter thing to do would be to train staff to fill in when she is not around or maybe get another website provider if these problems keeps occurring. Janine was on vacation for two weeks recently and everything was a mess. That’s what the staff said when I called to find out myself. The good thing is that the board is always available and always returns calls As for CC1, they stay on top of all these things all the tijme because they have a lot of volunteers. I watch the meetings and get much more info than before. I also have been told that people don’t have to send in as many freedom of info requests as before. That’s my opinion. I find this government very open and that include Wegman who seems as open and willing as Schmidt, something he wasn’t so much before.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Why do we have to learn of this vital news fourth hand — apparently from the village to the press to Ms. Cudequest to the blog?

Casting no aspersions on Ms. Cudequest, I don’t want to get information filtered through her or CCC1. She has no accountability. The open-government team needs to get its communications act together and talk to its residents on a more direct and timely basis.
