County Executive Andy Spano announced today that the Bronx River Parkway will be the setting for the Westchester Marathon on Sunday, October 9, 8 a.m., beginning at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.
“This event is also a perfect complement to our BeFit Westchester campaign, which promotes a variety of activities – from mall walks to marathons — to help residents eat smarter and play harder every day,” Spano said. “These dedicated runners, who not only have succeeded in getting fit but also work hard to stay in shape, are great role models for all of us.”
Presented by Westchester County Parks and Genesis Adventures, the event includes both a full marathon (26.2 miles) and half-marathon (13.1 miles), along with a special mini-marathon for kids.
The course starts at the Westchester County Center and heads south on the Bronx River Parkway to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers, where runners will move to the northbound side of the parkway. Those running the half-marathon will end at the County Center, while those running the full marathon will continue for a second loop. Course is certified by the USA Track & Field; USA T & F Rules of Competition will be in force during the race. Walkers are welcome to join the half-marathon portion of the race.
The race begins at 8 a.m. Awards will be presented at 2:30 p.m. Registration fee is $85 for the marathon and $55 for the half-marathon; there is no fee for walkers for the half-marathon. Fee includes a medal for all who complete the race, along with a tee shirt and “goodie bag.” Participants must be 14 years of age or older.
Deadline for registration is Friday, September 30. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
A Corporate Half-Marathon Challenge is available to all businesses from the tri-state area to compete as a team of up to five runners in Coed, All-Male and All-Female teams divisions. Entry fee for the Corporate Half-Marathon Challenge is $1,000 per team and includes the sponsorship of an on-course aid station, Corporate Half-Marathon tee shirt for each participant, and a separate awards ceremony.
Future marathon competitors ages 5 to 10 can compete in a special one-kilometer Kidgits Race, also beginning at 8 a.m. that day, at the County Center. Registration for this race is free and sign up takes place on the day of the race on a first-come, first-served basis. The race is sponsored by the Simon Kidgits Club.
During the event, the New York Search & Rescue team will provide medical coverage for the race. Aid stations will also be available at various sites along the course.
After the race, participants can enjoy refreshments provided by Whole Foods Market of White Plains.
The event is sponsored by Chrysler Jeep, Eastern Mountain Sports, Simon Malls/The Westchester, Dermatone Sunblock, Whole Foods Markets, News 12 Westchester, 103.9 WFAS radio, and Saratoga Spring Water. A portion of the proceeds from the race will benefit the Friends of Westchester County Parks, Inc.
The Westchester County Center is located at 198 Central Avenue in White Plains, at the junction of the Bronx River Parkway and Tarrytown Road (Route 119). Please note that the Bronx River Parkway will be closed to automobile traffic from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on the day of the race.
