The Village Board of Trustees has scheduled a Public Hearing on November 21, 2005 at 8:00 PM, in consideration of proposed Local Law Introductory No. 3 of 2005, which would prohibit parking of vehicles on village sidewalks and curbs.
Significant investments continue to be made in the construction and rehabilitation of sidewalks throughout the Village, due in part from programs like the Sidewalk Replacement Program, which has reimbursed residents up to 50% of costs for work by Acoccella Contracting.
As a result, Village staff, from the Police Department, Department of Public Works, and the Engineering Department, has recommended that legislation be officially enacted to formally prohibit parking on sidewalks and to discontinue the practice of allowing parking on sidewalks during snow emergencies. This recommendation comes as Village officials believe that “it is in the public’s best interest not to allow sidewalks to be used for parking cars as this practice damages both sidewalks and curbs”.
However, according to the forthcoming resolution, “the Village will issue special hardship permits to those residents without access to off-street parking allowing permit holders to park on the street during a snow fall”.
