Croton Harmon SEPTA Hosts Social Difficulties Workshop

January 25, 2006

The Croton Harmon Special Education PTA proudly presents a parent workshop called “Navigating the Social World: Strategies for Kids with Social/Communication Difficulties” on Thursday January 26, 2006 at 7:00 PM in the Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School (CET) Multi-purpose Room.

Cynthia Potel JD, LCSW and Pat Rowan LMSW are both Croton-based professionals who have been working with young persons facing social difficulties for many years. The workshop recognizes that childhood and adolescence are times in life when most people learn to negotiate the social world through osmosis. But for some young people, this learning process does not occur naturally. The result can be social alienation and isolation.

This workshop will:

  • Reveal the characteristics of social/communication problems that hamper the natural development of social skills,
  • provide an understanding of friendship from a developmental perspective, and
  • support parents in developing strategies that foster the social play and leisure supports necessary for children to acquire appropriate social skills.

Additionally, babysitting is available for attendees upon request. Please contact croton-Harmon SEPTA Co-presidents Donna O’Malley (271-2429) or Andrea Furey (271-4753) for more information.
