DiFrancesco Does Disservice to Croton GOP and Village

February 1, 2006

Crotonblog: Letters to the Editor, Croton-on-Hudson, New York 10520
The rabid propensity of Mr. DiFrancesco to attack with falsehoods and disrespect any and all things non-republican (see: “Croton Dems Nominate Failed Mayoral Candidate Galleli to Run for Trustee”) has no place in COH. Perhaps we should not blame the young Mr. DiFrancesco as he is likely the victim of a childhood filled with nothing but the divisive, putrid and despicable rantings of the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Karl Rove. Unfortunately, Mr. DiFrancesco (search) is too green to have seen politics before they became bogged down into a game of who attacks who better.

Regardless, the basic fact of the matter is this, as residents of this village, we all need to live together, hopefully in relative peace and harmony. Disrespectful personal and hurtful attacks on long standing and distinguished members of our COH community like Ann Gallelli (search) who have generously volunteered their time and efforts for decades to the betterment of our community should be unanimously rejected and disavowed by both parties. I call on Mayor Schmidt (search) and Trustees Steinberg (search) and Brennan (search) to immediately and publicly renounce these statements made by their party’s chairman.

It should be noted that such partisan attacks certainly do not make one want to participate in the local community and government — areas where it is hard enough to find people willing enough to expend their precious time and efforts. Equally important, it should be noted that potential home buyers in COH often visit this Blog to get a feel for the community before buying - exactly what message are we giving these potential home buyers regarding the joys of living in COH.

As the election approaches let us each remain focused on the issues facing our community and if we are happy with the current administrations performance on such issues as: (i) Metro Enviro Site, (ii) Commuter Lot, (iii) Recreational Facilities/Community Center, and (iv) tax hikes. The performance of the existing trustees (both GOP and Dem) and the statements, positions and policies of the candidates should be the considering factor, not misleading and false partisan attacks which have no place in our beloved COH.

This attack format in Croton goes back to the days of a young Deb McCarthy and John Sarcone who rode the tails of the Newt Gingrich style of take no prisoners politics.

Out of this idea came a new “freshman republican” army that has littered our county with attacks and character assinations. Whatever, however to get into office. Washington is one thing, Croton on Hudson is another and not a place for this.

Young Rob is living the current Republican idea and the good Greg Schmidt has alligned himself with this idea. It’s sad because Greg is a nice guy just hooked up with the wrong crowd.

Time to get back to small town living. Get into office and get to work for the better of the village not spend your time pandering for the next election.

And now for another Reality Check.

The time has come to face the facts. It is the Steinberg/Gonzalez campaign and the Schmidt régime which are responsible for Mr. DiFrancesco and his denigration of the political process in our Village. While surely he is willingly complicit, and must bear responsibility for his words and actions, his vile attacks on Charlie Kane (See: “Trustee Kane Should Stick to the Facts”) and Ann Gallelli (See: “Croton Dems Nominate Failed Mayoral Candidate Gallelli to Run for Trustee”) bear all the hallmarks of the Schmidt/Steinberg/Brennan administration’s way of doing things. Let me tell you what I mean.

Despite having campaigned on a platform of “open government” we have been subjected to the most secretive Village administration in memory. Clandestine closed door meetings of which the public is never told, questionably convened executive sessions, and votes taken out of pubic view with no television cameras present. I daresy that this Village Board has met more times out of the public eye than in regular televised meetings. Thus, the Schmidt/Steinberg/Brennan régime hides behind a public veneer of cordiality while cutting off debate and secretly pushing through their politically motivated agenda.

Similarly, by having Mr. DiFrancesco front the smear campaign against Ms. Gallelli and Mr. Kane, the Steinberg/Gonzalez team seeks to insulate itself from being viewed in a negative light - while reaping the presumed benefits of the attacks.

But it is well to recall that the vituperous Mr. DiFrancesco spews his venom not as a private citizen but as Chair of the Croton Republican Committee — the very party on whose line Steinberg/Gonzalez are running. Indeed, the party committees are as close to a formal campaign organization as we ever see on the local level. Yet, not Steinberg nor Gonzalez nor Schmidt have denounced the attacks mounted on their behalf.

So I say to Mr. Steinberg, Mr. Gonzalez, Mr. Schmidt and Mr. DiFrancesco: We are not fooled, we know who you are and what you are doing.

Finally, it is well to note the long record of public service of each of the citizens reviled by Mr. DiFrancesco. Charlie Kane has served the Village thoughtfully and with care. Ann Gallelli does more for the Village before lunch on Monday than Mr. DiFrancesco has done in his entire life.

And that, my friends, is a Reality Check.
