There's the Dam Drill...

May 13, 2006

Structural engineers were recently onsite at the base of the New Croton Dam with a drilling mechanism to conduct a routine test—held every 20 years—to analyze the structural integrity of the dam’s foundation. After a core sample is brought to the surface by way of a specially design drill bit, scientists analyze the composition of the sample as way of gauging the strength and composition of the foundation. During the process, the drill bores to a depth of 42 feet where limestone and marble is found nearest to the Croton River while granite is more abundant further to the East end of the dam.
