"Simply Strings" Concert in Croton-on-Hudson to Feature David Geber and Julia Lichten

May 22, 2006

On the evening of Saturday, June 10th, 2006 in the village of Croton-on-Hudson, two—two!—world-class cellists will grace the stage of the high school auditorium. David Geber and Julia Lichten, both longterm faculty at the Manhattan School of Music, will perform in a “Simply Strings” concert to benefit the thriving program in the Croton-Harmon schools.

Mr. Geber and Ms. Lichten are world-renowned soloists, recitalists, and recording artists; they have each appeared with major orchestras and regularly give master classes at music festivals in the U.S. and Europe. Many audience members will also recognize Mr. Geber from his many years as cellist of the American String Quartet (1974 to 2002). The performances of Mr. Geber and Ms. Lichten in the “Simply Strings” concert will provide a rare opportunity for local string students to hear the exquisite playing of these accomplished musicians in person.

Now in its seventh year, the strings program in the Croton-Harmon school district has grown prodigiously since its inception; there are currently 110 young string players in the program, playing in ensembles at all three schools in the district, as well as participating in county-wide orchestras.

In 2004, violinist Jane Parkhouse and violist Sara Worden were joined on the Croton string faculty by cellist Christine Chu, a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, to provide instruction for students interested in studying the cello; the number of cellists in the program subsequently climbed from two to 18. Hence, this concert is consciously cello-centric!

In addition to Mr. Geber and Ms. Lichten, the program will feature a duet by Ms. Chu and 10th grade cellist Justin Goldsmith, as well as student ensembles including the Croton Cello Choir.

The “Simply Strings” concert is at 7pm on Saturday, June 10th at the Croton-Harmon High School, with a reception to follow. Concert tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, if purchased by June 7th, or $20/$15 at the door.
