The Croton Democratic Committee has endorsed John Hall of Dover Plains to run against Rep. Sue Kelly for the 19th Congressional District (CD) seat in next November’s election. “We looked closely at all six Democratic candidates” said chairman Paul Rolnick, “and, while any of them would be better than Sue Kelly, we concluded that John Hall is the strongest candidate and the one whose views best represent our concerns.”
“Our decision did not come quickly,” said Rolnick. “Our members began attending forums of the Democratic candidates last December. Through meet-and-greet discussions and answers to a 5-page questionnaire we sent them in early April, we saw how they presented themselves and how they compared on the issues. On April 18, we held our own candidates’ forum at the Croton Library which was attended by over 150 people. In the end, we found we had a strong consensus for Hall.”
The Croton Democrats will take their endorsement to a convention Thursday night in Mt. Kisco where the entire Westchester County Democratic Committee will determine if it wishes to endorse one of the six candidates. Others in the running include Judy Aydelott of Katonah, Jim Martorano of Yorktown Heights, Darren Rigger of Peekskill, Ben Shuldiner of Crompond, and Gary Suraci of Wappingers Falls.
“While the convention will not be binding on any candidate, many Democrats felt we could not wait for the September primary to start focusing our efforts to dump Sue Kelly” said Rolnick. “She represents much of what is wrong with the Bush administration, and this is our opportunity to help change things in Washington.”
The Croton Democrats’ endorsement congratulates the six candidates on their vigor and standing on the issues, and hopes all will unite behind a single opponent to Kelly “so we can make CD 19 one of the 15 seats needed to retake the House” said Rolnick.
A recording of the April 18th candidates’ forum may be seen Thursday (May 25) on cable television channel 78 at 7:00 PM and online as a streaming video on Google. Further information and links to the candidates’ web sites may be found at take19.blogspot.com.
