Croton Village Attorney Springs a Surprise

June 4, 2006

* Breaking News *

After one year of intensive participation as Village Attorney, Marianne Stecich (search) of the law firm Murphy Stecich & Powell, L.L.P. of Tarrytown, N.Y., will formally tender her resignation in a letter to Village Manager Rick Herbek to be read at the board meeting tomorrow night, June 5, 2006.

Only a year ago, in a surprise move, newly elected Mayor Dr. Gregory Schmidt had announced that he and newly elected Republican Trustee Thomas Brennan and newly appointed Republican Trustee James Steinberg (who filled the seat vacated by Dr. Schmidt on his election to the mayoralty) had decided to hire Marianne Stecich. This arbitrary decision followed an earlier decision not to renew the contract of Village Attorney Seymour M. Waldman and thus unceremoniously ousted, without explanation, the respected attorney who had served the village faithfully and competently as counsel for four decades.

In her letter, Ms. Stecich cites greater than expected time demands and personal issues for declining to renew her contract with the Village of Croton-on-Hudson. The Board of Trustees will be conducting interviews over the next several weeks in an attempt to find a replacement, but leaving the village without an attorney in the interim.
