- 1956 - Commissioner Ford Frick inaugurates the Cy Young Award to honor baseball’s best pitcher each season
- 1941 - Joe DiMaggio goes 4 for 5 in game 1 and 2 for 4 in game 2 of doubleheader against Philadelphia A’s to extend hitting streak to 48 games
- 1933 - Baseball’s first All-Star game is played at Comiskey Park in Chicago
