Does Rep. Sue Kelly Still Support Leader Denny Hastert?

October 2, 2006

Well, the only way to find out the answer to that question is to call 19th Congressional District Representative Sue Kelly (R) and ask her.

Here are some good questions to start with;

  1. Does Congresswoman Kelly believe that Denny Hastert should remain as House Speaker since he lent cover to former Congressman and admitted sexual predator Mark Foley (R-FL) for at least 5 months (read transcript from Foley’s email exchange with an unidentified 16-year-old male Page)?
  2. If Ms. Kelly is re-elected on November 7th and the Republicans retain their majority, will she vote for Mr. Hastert for Speaker?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Hastert is out by this time next week.

If he goes, it will be fascinating to see who replaces him. It could be Roy Blunt, but his ties to tobacco and Tom Delay will turn people off. If the Republicans were smart they’d choose Deborah Pryce – if the party makes a point to emphasize her pro-choice position, and moderate stances on some other issues they could get some moderate votes. John Boehner is out because he is involved in this scandal.

My guess is an obscure ultra-conservative.
