Was There a Better Way to Apologize for the Fake Water Bills? Absolutely.

Crotonblog: Letters to the Editor, Croton-on-Hudson, New York 10520
Greetings! As one of the recipients of the fraudulent water bills, I wanted to thank you for posting the treasurer’s statement from the trustees meeting (see: “No Longer Mum, Croton Official Addresses Water Bill Scam”). I’ve been on a business trip to California all week and haven’t been able to keep up.

Was there a better way to make an apology? Absolutely. My hope is that the village will send personal letters of apology to the people affected to make sure those who don’t watch the trustees’ meetings are reached. It would be the honorable thing to do. I also can’t shake the feeling that the people responsible aren’t really sure why this was wrong.

But it was an apology. It was public. My guess is that this whole episode was humiliating enough that the village will think twice, will think about its residents, if a similar idea percolates again. Let’s accept it and move on.
