Excellent picture. What a thrill it must have been for the photographer. As someone who has been a hunter for many years, and seen many, many coyotes in upstate NY and some down by the gorge and along Rt. 129; to me this one looks immature. Its face doesn’t look as full or elongated as they usually do at full maturity (could be the lighting and angle of the picture).
One crucial thing to remember for us Crotonites: coyotes travel and hunt in packs, so often when you see one there are generally more very nearby. I have been chased by them while out hunting upstate so take it seriously if you see one around here… they can be brazen. In general, they are the color of the one in the picture but can also be black and gray/white. The eastern U.S. is saturated with coyotes. Be careful.
