Team Croton Hoops Raises $800.00 for Malaria Prevention

March 28, 2007

Tom Moore Sr. reports that the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) recently raised $800.00 dollars for the “Nothing But Nets” program—a global campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa—from the Croton Basketball community (team name: Croton Hoops).

Mr. Moore explains that “The initial outreach for ‘Nothing But Nets’ was accomplished through an article written by Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly that was published on May 5, 2006.” He adds, “So far the entire campaign has raised $1.2 million—with more than 120,000 bed nets having already been delivered to Nigeria.” The outreach message calls on those who had “ever cut down a net, jumped over a net, watched the New Jersey Nets, worn a hair net, surfed the net, or thought of Angelina Jolie in fishnets to donate $10.00 to purchase insecticide-treated nets,” according to Moore.
