Hold the Date: Book Lover's Silent Auction Benefit on March 1st

February 10, 2008

Whether you collect cookbooks, love a good mystery, or just enjoy an occasional “guilty pleasure,” the Croton Free Library Association has a book for you at their first-ever Book Lovers’ Silent Auction and party on Saturday, March 1, 2008. You can enjoy food and wine—donated by local establishments—and listen to live music by local performers while you bid on any of the 40 packages offered. Over 125 brand new books are for sale, all donated by major New York publishers, and most of the packages are supplemented with gifts from local businesses.

Viewing of auction items will be available at 12 Noon in the library’s Ottinger Room. The party—and bidding—will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Croton Free Library Association, which recently celebrated its 70th anniversary in conjunction with the library. A fundraising organization of the library, the association supports the library’s programs and services as well as special events throughout the year.

The affair will kick off with a raffle featuring a rare signed John Grisham book. Also raffled off will be a “May the Force Be With You” package featuring the acclaimed coffee table book, The Making of Star Wars, combined with a signed copy of this fall’s best-selling Star Wars pop-up book and a Star Wars T-shirt from Groovy on Grand, as well as “Toddler Favorites” package which includes an enormous collection of toddler books and a 4-foot plush giraffe from Wondrous Things.

The silent auction includes collections for all interests and budgets, like:

  • Those who love the crime novels of Croton resident Maggie Barbieri can bid on signed copies of her first two novels as well as the right to name a character in her fourth novel.

  • For the history-lover, there’s the “Don’t Know Much about History” package, which features eight of David McCullough’s award-winning volumes as well as American Creation by Joseph Ellis (audio book) and The War by Geoffrey Edwards and Ken Burns.

  • For the young reader, the auction will offer a “Spiderwick Deluxe” package featuring a boxed set of the Spiderwick Chronicles, a craft kit, field guide coloring kit and the official movie companion volume.

  • The “Calling All Sports Fans” collection features seven best-selling books on various sports topics (including Making the Play: How to Get Baseball Back by Dave Winfield and Total Access by ESPN’s Rick Eisen).

  • Decorating do-it-yourselfers will enjoy the “No Place like Home” package which includes two home decor coffee-table books and a half-hour design consultation with interior designer Lisa McTiernan of Lifestyles & Interiors by Lisa.

  • Aspiring musicians can snap up “Can Your Own Version of ‘Live at Budokan’ Be Far Behind?” which consists of biographies of Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix as well as CDs and a gift certificate for guitar lessons from Croton resident Cory Williamson.

  • Booklovers who would rather hear a good story than read one can find a specially-designed assortment: “Think and Drive,” which features an eclectic collection of award-winning audio books.
