Redundant and Excessive Expenses

To the editor:
Can anyone tell me of even one single service or government function that is not or could not be provided by our own local government?
We have so many layers of government doing things for us and duplicating services already provided, it’s no wonder our taxes are among the very highest in the nation.
Someone has to put the brakes on and have the courage to seriously look at the 1000 pound gorilla that’s grown over the years.
If I wasn’t so old and tired, I’d start by eliminating just about all County government, It clearly favors lower Westchester and the wealthier communities down there. That’s where the real money and votes are so of course that’s where our tax dollars are spent.
Then I might move on to the town and suggest we secede from under their yolk. We have our own wonderful police, fire, recreation, engineering and highway departments who provide the very best for our community.
The state and federal entities are too cumbersome and circuitous for my limited brain to get my arms around. But one might start with the exorbitant retirement funds and benefits for the hundreds of thousands of state and federal elected officials and employees
Believe me, I’m not naive enough to hope this might happen in my lifetime. But someone, some where, some how has to find relief from these redundant and excessive expenses foisted on overburdened taxpayers.

One point that comes to my mind when I hear opinions from elected officials or former elected officials on the many layers of government that we have in New York State is that they all want someone else’s layer of government eliminated. Ms. Grant advocates for the elimination of County Government while someone from the County level might advocate for the elimination of Village Government. Ms. Grant is smart to recognize that this is part of the reason why the elimination of County Government won’t happen in the near future.
