The Garden Road School presents a benefit screening of the documentary “Who Does She Think She Is?” by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Pamela Tanner Boll on May 1, 2010, 6:30PM, at the Peekskill Hat Factory.
The film, which follows five fierce women who refuse to choose between their families and their art, examines problematic intersections of our time: mothering and creativity, partnering and independence, economics and art. (www.whodoesshethinksheis.net)

Maria Rubiales de Chamorro, Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the United Nations, will attend Croton Bridges to Community’s Nicaraguan Benefit on Sunday, March 1, 2009 5:00PM at Temple Israel of Northern Westchester 31 Glengary Road, Croton on Hudson, NY 10520.
“It is with great pleasure that we welcome the Ambassador. Being able to build a bridge between Croton and Masaya is a wonderful thing. Being able to express our appreciation for the opportunity to serve the Nicaraguan people is a great privilege” says Luann Ricciardi, Croton Bridges Team Coordinator.
The dinner is a way for a group of Croton students to raise awareness and support for a global service project they will be doing in Nicaragua. The evening will include delicious food compliments of local business and groups including; The Spanish Ministry of Holy Name of Mary Parish, Memphis Mae’s BBQ, Capriccios and Justin’ Thyme. Popular local band The Blue Water Band and Croton Harmon High Schools Strings Ensemble will perform. A Silent auction with items donated by local and corporate supporters will be held. Use of a vacation home, tickets to Broadway shows, an autographed Jon Bon Jovi guitar and even Xbox360s are some of the items donated. Distinguished guests for the evening will include Maria Rubiales de Chamarro, the Nicaraguan Ambassador to the U.N., Rusty Pedersen, Associate Executive Director from Bridges to Community. Local and state officials have been invited as well as local clergy and distinguished guests.
Several months ago, a group began to form here in Croton. They call themselves Croton Bridges. A small group of 10 young people and 3 adult chaperones from our village have decided to answer our new President’s call to serve others globally. On April 4th, the group will travel with an organization called Bridges to Community to Nicaragua where they will participate in a sustainability program for the people in the small rural community of Masaya just south of Managua. The young people involved in this project will be working to build sustainable housing in the Masaya.
“It is inspiring to see that as a result of the call of President Obama and his family to service others, young people in the United States will become more involved in their communities and in communities abroad. I am very please that students from Croton Harmon Schools have chosen to give service in Masaya, a province in our country that inspires warmth in all Nicaragua because of its history and contributions to Nicaragua’s popular culture. Nicaragua and its people are always grateful for expressions of friendship from the people of the United States”, says Rubiales de Chamorro.
The ten teens going on the trip have raised $19,000 toward the $27,000 needed to make the trip. The group hopes to close the gap in fundraising and raise additional funds at the benefit for Bridges to Community’s efforts
“It is the hard work of groups like Croton Bridges that creates real opportunities for change. Change not only for the communities we work with in Nicaragua, but in the perception and attitudes that our volunteers have towards developing countries. Bridges is proud to host such a passionate group of adults and students this April” says Rusty Pedersen, Associate Executive Director, Bridges to Community.

Your help is urgently needed to save the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium from severe state budget cuts proposed by Governor Paterson. This year alone, 76 living museums across New York State, like the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium, are singled out for the largest cut — 55 percent - and next year, all state funding through the Zoos, Botanical Gardens and Aquariums Program (ZBGA) in his proposed budget will permanently be eliminated. If enacted this proposal would have a devastating impact with long-term, unprecedented repercussions both locally and state wide.
As you know, the Wildlife Conservation Society manages the world’s largest system of urban wildlife parks that includes the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium. The Bronx Zoo had approximately two million visitors in 2008- roughly half of who live in New York City. The Bronx Zoo provides free informal science education to approximately one million children and adults each year. The New York Aquarium welcomed more than 746,000 visitors last year. As one of the largest attractions in Brooklyn, the New York Aquarium plays a central role in the quality of life of its residents. Both facilities are signature New York attractions with global stature and reach. Further, we generate millions of dollars each year for the state in tourism and economic development. We know we need to be a part of a budget solution; all we are asking is for the governor to use a scalpel as opposed to an ax when making funding decisions.
Time is of the essence. We need your help to send a message to Albany that these devastating cuts to the ZBGA are unacceptable. Click this link and make a difference. Or you can call Governor Paterson’s office immediately at (518) 474-8390 and ask him to save the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium funding.
Please email this letter to everyone you know!
The staff at the Wildlife Conservation Society, and 20,000 animals thank you.

On Sunday, June 1, the Garden Road School’s kindergarten/first grade class held a bicycle fundraiser for victims of the earthquake in China. Following a two-mile ride along the North County Trailway, the students sold lemonade they had hand-squeezed earlier. Proceeds of over $200 from pledges and lemonade sales will be donated to The American Red Cross.
Through the lens of China’s tragedy, the students have explored both how to cope with dangerous situations that arise in their own lives, and how they can contribute as world citizens.
For information on the Garden Road School, located in Crompond, NY, or its upcoming Open House on June 7th, please visit www.thegardenroad.org or call 914-827-0451.

This just in from the Westchester Cycle Club: The “PEDALS FOR PROGRESS” USED BIKE DRIVE is this Saturday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the First Presbyterian Church, 2880 Crompond Road in Yorktown Heights. That’s Routes 202/35, just east of the Taconic State Parkway, across the street from FDR state Park.
Bike owners bring their RUST FREE BIKES with a $10 donation to cover part of the shipping costs. Both the monetary donation and the gift of the bike are tax-deductible, with bikes typically valued at half their purchase price. They are also collecting USED SEWING MACHINES and USED SOCCER CLEATS and SOCCER BALLS.
All donations will be shipped to Jinotepe, Nicaragua, to be reconditioned at EcoTec and distributed at low cost to poor working adults and their children. The bikes provide their new owners with transportation to work, a ride to the clinic, or a way to transport produce to market. Kids ride bikes to school or for fun.
Adult and children’s bikes are accepted, but not tricycles. Bikes with thin tires can be used in communities with paved roads. Bikes must be in repairable condition, and the frames must be free from rust. Rust on bright metal (handlebars and rims)is acceptable. If a bike has been stored INSIDE for several years, it will most likely be acceptable. Flat tires are fine, but the bike needs two wheels. Parts or disassembled bikes aren’t taken.
