'Shout Out' to Crotone, Italy

Long before, the Village of Croton-on-Hudson was incorporated in 1898, there was the Achaean colony of Croton, Italy—founded around 710 BC.
Now called Crotone, it is located in southern Italy, in Calabria, on the Ionian Sea (satellite map). Though larger in size and with a population of over 60,000, Crotone, governed by Mayor Peppino Vallone, is also a waterfront community with Mediterranean facing beaches and hotels that help to support tourism. Despite and economic crisis in the 1980’s and a major flood in 1996, Crotone continues to undergo urban renewal to revitalize its local economy.
Crotone’s main attractions include an archaeological museum, a provincial museum of contemporary art, and the Antiquarium di Torre Nao. The climate in Crotone is mild with daytime temperatures averaging 57 to 87 degrees, a relative humidity of 70% and average precipitation between .5 to 3.5 inches per month.
Neighboring Cantanzaro, Italy, Crotone is accessible to travelers via air, at the Sant’Anna Airport, rail and automobile.

Notice Anything Different?
The volume of comments on Crotonblog has increased tremendously.
Until now we have been following the practice—common on many blogs—of showing the oldest comments first. But this requires readers to work their way through the oldest comments to read the most recent.
So we stood the comments on their head.
Any comment you make now will appear first instead of last—saving valuable reading time. Our aim is a blog easier to read and to use.
It’s a done deal. See for yourself. If you want to comment about the new look of Crotonblog’s comments, you can add one here.

“I think it’s also important for the president to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn.”

Real-time Croton Weather Data Link Added to Crotonblog
![]()
Midtown Manhattan, March 26, 2007
Not everyone can wake up and look out their window early in the morning and peer up at the New York magazine time and temperature sign to get a feel for the current weather conditions. But in Croton-on-Hudson, residents have something even better. Real-time weather conditions on the Internet captured from streaming weather data from the Croton Harmon train station.
In February, Crotonblog reported in a story titled, “Croton Installs Web-accessible Weather Monitoring Station at Train Parking Lot,” that this new service was online. Since then, after several requests to place a high-visibility link to the weather station, we are happy to report that we have done so. Located at the top-left of all pages are two new weather links—one for the current Croton live weather conditions and the other for a local weather forecast from NOAA.

High Praise for Crotonblog from Mayor Dr. Gregory Schmidt
According to the mayor, Crotonblog is the “The Internet chat room that everybody uses in this community.” We’ll forgive him for confusing a blog with a chat room, but we hope he’ll soon learn the difference.
Crotonblog is happy to report that website traffic for January and February 2007 remained strong—exceeding our most optimistic expectations. As illustrated in the chart above, during January, Crotonblog welcomed 4,507 unique visitors who initiated 15,881 visitor sessions and viewed 65,948 pages. While in February, there were 4,337 unique visitors who initiated 14,985 visitor sessions and viewed 62,754 pages.
That’s an average of 512 daily visits and 2,127 daily page views in January, while in February there were 535 daily visits and 2,241 daily page views!

Advertising on Crotonblog: A Google AdWords Primer
Since receiving the following three questions from two local businesses about the really exciting world of Online Advertising and the many contextual advertisements that appear on Crotonblog, we are presenting our answers for all to review. Enjoy!
“How much does it cost to advertise on Crotonblog?” After setting up a Google AdWords account (See “”) for your business, you set your own daily budget and only pay when someone clicks your ad and goes to your website. This type of online advertising is called “Pay per Click.”
“Does Crotonblog provide reports such as the number of views and clicks that my ad gets?” Crotonblog does not provide any reports to advertisers. Since we are part of Google’s content network, all Google AdWords customers get access to detailed advertising performance reports for metrics such as “Cost per Click,” number of clicks, and the “Click Through Rate” from Google. Additionally, advertisers can also track return on investment (ROI) goals like purchases or sales leads with tools like Google Analytics—which is free to AdWords advertisers.
“Why do some “Ads by Google” feature only one ad per placement while others share space with up to three other advertisers on Crotonblog?” The ads that contain one contextual ad or image ad per placement have been placed directly by an advertiser to specifically appear on Crotonblog—pending our approval. (See Crotonblog’s ad placement page). The other ad placements are delivered to Crotonblog by Google AdWords based on contextual matching, geographic location and demographic information.
