Our Back to School Wishes for Croton
We at iluvcrtn wish all our neighbors a happy and healthy New Year. Does It seem strange to read that message on this 2nd day of September? It’s because we believe our “new year” begins with Labor Day and the opening of a new school year. We’ve long recognized that we are a community of, by and for our children.
Our lives, for the most part, revolve around them and their schedules whether we have children living at home or not. With the advent of a new school year our kids go off equipped with new lunch boxes, backpacks and school supplies. New schedules are read and reread so both kids and parents know when and where they are supposed to be. They return to clean, fresh and newly painted classrooms and say hello to old friends and teachers and embrace new ones. It’s a new year with new excitement and new challenges. Our wish for parents, students and teachers alike is that it’s a good and satisfying year. We hope it’s filled with gentleness and joy, excitement and adventure and the awesome awareness of stretching and growing.

Luvin' Croton in Spite of its Faults
We’re reasonably sure anyone reading this issue of iluvcrtn has heard the expression “…love them in spite of their faults.” This issue of iluvcrtn asks you to think about not only what we luv about crtn, but things we’d like to see improved.
Perhaps procedures need to be changed by finding a new way to do business; perhaps we’re overlooking some things that might enhance life in our community; perhaps we should do away with some things we’ve been doing for years that might no longer be worthwhile.
And because we do luvcrtn and because we all have an interest in both the good and the less good, we ask that you focus your own areas of concern. We think it’s a good idea to get them on the table at times other than during election campaigns if we hope to have them addressed. Putting them “out there” is only the start. We need to follow up if we hope actions will result. Living in Croton is already good; let’s make it even better! Here’s some ideas:

And May You Keep Luvin' Croton...
Here we go again… a long, hazy, lazy summer ahead of us. We have so much to be thankful for and to enjoy here in our hometown. Let’s start by rejoicing that the recent election season and campaigns here in Croton are over. Win, lose or draw, we had good people who were willing to “put themselves out there” and to give endless hours and effort to serve all Rejoice because they seem to bring out the worst in some of our best people.
Those of us interested and concerned about the past, present and future of this great little village can get pretty passionate about what we think is best and appropriate for our community. And sometimes, we can get pretty aggressive and unpleasant with one another when we try to rally support for our candidates. We’ve come to expect this behavior from our national politicians but most of us dislike it so close to home. We like to think of ourselves as friends and neighbors who will surely disagree on many issues but who will remain reasonable and civil with one another as we work together to resolve differences of opinion.

Still Luvin' Croton from Skating to Sentiments
Now seems to be a good time for another iluvcrtn issue. As always there is plenty to talk about in this little village and we love sharing news of all the good stuff that goes on.

The many recreational offerings available in Croton are always of interest to residents especially now as we face this upcoming week of school vacation. How timely that the Duck Pond is frozen solid and ready for skating. The green ‘go ahead” flag is flying high. Driving by the other night was to see a Currier and Ives painting with young and old alike gliding and spinning in delight across the pond. The moon was full and someone was playing music, the lights were on and colorful hats and jackets were plentiful. Nice, nice sight. We need to make certain to abide by the rules established for skating as published by our recreation department. Safe skating and enjoy!

Luvin' Croton from Shore to Shops...
Now, before we all get caught up in the often-hectic holiday season, we want to take just a minute to reflect on yet one more wonderful year in this special place we call home. Our very first issue of iluvcrtn produced a list of some of the things we luv about Croton. This original list has become a never-ending one and each year we have more to add. So much happens in this special place, it’s hard to keep up with it all. This is a great time of the year and this issue will try to capture some of the things we’ve loved adding to the list.

Summer of "Luv" 2006 in Croton-on-Hudson
What a treat. The houselights dimmed and silence descended in the Fred Blais Auditorium at CHHS a few weeks ago. Parents, grandparents and friends of our youngest Thespians sat in anxious anticipation as the curtain was raised. The room then exploded with the music and songs of this special bunch of kids. And a most amazing thing struck this member of the audience. As we looked across the stage trying to spot our kids, it was dramatic to realize that every single child up there was smiling from ear to ear. They were having the time of their young lives as they sang, danced and delivered their lines almost without mistakes. Even the few slip-ups generated giggles and laughter. There was no embarrassment and every child was star. It was a treasure to watch and is one more thing to add to our list of why weluvcrtn. The kids are to be congratulated and many of the involved adults deserve our thanks and praise.

It's Hard Keepin' Up with All That's Good in Croton
It’s been far too long since the last issue of iluvcrtn hit the stands. It’s not that things aren’t hopping and happening in town; it’s that so much happens it’s hard to keep up with it. This is an especially great time of the year in our much loved village and this issue will try to capture some of the many, many good things going on.
Lazy, hazy summer is upon us and may it be a happy, relaxed one for all. The kids are out of school and ready to rock! Beautiful Silver Lake is in full swing and the water is as cold (and refreshing!) as it always has been. Senasqua Park affords peace and beauty like no other place in the world. The Croton and Hudson Rivers wrap this Village in a blanket of serenity and comfort that we’ve come to depend upon over many turbulent times.
Steve Jennings and his wonderful Sailing School has a renewed lease with the village and we can be sure he will continue his care and love for the park and river. He has introduced the Village of Croton to many newcomers and projects a positive and exciting aspect of life in this special little Village. We are truly in a special place and have added responsibilities to protect and preserve our treasured natural resources.

A Time For Open Discussion
This will be a hard edition to write as the Metro Enviro operation in Croton remains so divisive and controversial. But because weluvcrtn it makes it even more important for us to openly discuss it with each other.
We think it will be useful to give additional coverage to the letters posted on crotonblog that lay out very clearly the implications and possible consequences of all the choices available. The village board needs to consider all the options and listen to residents who may have ideas and or preferences for one option over another.
It seems the only thing everyone can agree upon is that village boards, both past and resent, have had to make difficult decisions about how best to protect the village as a whole. Regardless of how we feel about the past and who did or did not do the right or wrong thing, we need to look forward and not backwards.

Good Fortune
How often have we rejoiced at living in Croton? How fortunate and blessed do we feel? This writer has just returned from a walk along Elliott Way, and the peace, quiet, and serenity of the air and sparkling waters of the Hudson were a dramatic and very visual reminder of our good fortune.
It was impossible not to notice the stark difference in our lives here in Croton today compared to the lives of our fellow Americans in New Orleans and Mississippi.
As the brilliant sun sparkled up and down the Hudson River, the beauty surrounding this writer literally was enough to take one’s breath away. Knowing there are places and people whose lives and very existence have been so threatened and devastated by Katrina that they don’t have the basic, minimum needs for themselves and their families is most sobering indeed.

For Our Wonderful Kids
We always talk about the many reasons we luvcrtn and how blessed we are to be a part of such a wonderful community. Every so often it’s healthy to have a little reminder. In the last edition, we talked about the perfectly inspiring graduation speech given by Sarah Dinger as her class prepared to move on to CHHS. Her talk was filled with the value of living in a community with such a strong support presence during the “sometimes anxious” teenage years. She focused on the importance of “family” support, not just immediate biological family, but extended family as well made up of friends, teachers, classmates and community members.
With the opening day of school right around the corner it’s a good time to remind our kids to reach beyond themselves and realize the importance of inclusion and acceptance.

I Luv Crtn - August 2005
Once again as we enter the month of August and wind down these lazy, hazy days of summer here in beautiful Croton, let's make certain we recognize how fortunate we are.
As we approach our new calendar year (it seems our calendars here in Croton start with the beginning of the new school year and end in June. Summer remains as break time to enjoy all that we as a community have to luv. Think back to those 90+ degree days in July; remember our air conditioned houses, tree lined streets; recall swimming in that cold refreshing Silver Lake; the wonderful gentle breezes wafting in from the cooling waters of the Hudson; feel quiet peace of the Croton River as our kayaks or canoes slipped silently through the clear serene water; remember the awesome privilege of sailing quietly along the beautiful Hudson as the sun slipped down behind the Palisades.

I Luv Crtn - July 2005
So much to write and think about! Doesn't this picture tell it all? Downtown Croton, Summerfest Sunday, the village shines! This year's Summerfest is reportedly the best ever. The crowds were larger, the vendors more diverse, the food exceptional, the music fantastic and the spirit of Croton was alive and well.... neighbor greeting neighbor, enjoying the incredibly beautiful weather -- perfect for a parade and good time. It can't get better than this !
